Some friendships are so strong that even decades apart can’t erase them.
Janie first met Judy in high school in 1960 in Kansas. They became fast friends.
Judy’s mother owned a flower shop, and Janie would often see Judy and her
sister Karen there while shopping with her own mom. It was the kind of friendship
built on shared laughter and simple moments, the kind that stays with you.
Judy married her high school sweetheart, a young man everyone remembered.
Janie often laughs when she recalls how handsome he was and how all the girls
were just a little jealous. Judy and her husband were devoted to one another from
the very beginning, the kind of couple you never forget.
After graduating a few years ahead of Janie, Judy moved away, and over time,
they lost touch. Life carried them in different directions. More than sixty years
passed.
Then, in September 2023, something extraordinary happened.
Janie came to tour Beatrice Hover with her son, looking for a place to stay
following rehab. As she walked down the hallway, she noticed a name on a door:
Judy Winger.
Her heart paused.
She knew that last name.
Could it possibly be the same Judy from Kansas — the one who married that
handsome high school sweetheart?
The thought seemed completely out of the question. After all, what were the
chances? She quietly dismissed it.
But the next morning in the dining room, Janie found herself seated beside a
familiar face. Gathering her courage, she turned and asked, “Do you remember
me?”
Judy smiled warmly and replied, “Oh yes, I know who you are.”
In that moment, 63 years disappeared.
They picked up right where they left off, sitting outside together, talking,
laughing, and sharing memories. What once seemed impossible became one of
life’s most beautiful surprises.
Sadly, Judy passed away last month. But what a gift it was that life brought them
back together when it mattered most. Their reunion gave them time to reconnect,
reminisce, and simply sit side by side once more.
Their story reminds us that even in an unfamiliar place, you may find a familiar
and friendly face sitting right beside you, proof that sometimes life truly comes
full circle.
